The Truth and Myths Behind Trenbolone—and How It Really Works

Posted on October 22, 2026October 22, 2026 By admin No Comments on The Truth and Myths Behind Trenbolone—and How It Really Works

Trenbolone has some reputation behind it, and rightfully so. It is considered one of the most potent anabolics ever created—and, in fact, it is the most potent steroid ever approved for human use. Yet it is also notorious for its side effects, a reputation that, unfortunately, has some merit too.

We’ll dissect it all for you, based on clinical data and some genuine, extensive UG experience.

First, some essential science. Across the internet, trenbolone is known as five times more anabolic and five times more androgenic than testosterone. It seems that William Llewellyn started this claim in his books on steroids around 30 years ago, and it lives on to this day.

So first, trenbolone is exceptionally anabolic. In in vitro assessments, it is estimated to be 3–5 times more anabolic, milligram for milligram, than testosterone. This does not mean that trenbolone builds five times more muscle. These laboratory assessments describe aspects of its activity, including its strong affinity for the androgen receptor.

Anabolic steroids interact with the androgen receptor to trigger their anabolic effects. The laboratory rating is an important indication, but it certainly doesn’t tell the whole story, as we’ll discuss below.

The androgenic part of that familiar “five times stronger” claim deserves a closer look.

First things first: trenbolone is not five times more androgenic than testosterone

Based on in vivo studies, trenbolone has a lower impact on androgenic tissues than testosterone. Let’s first look at what happens to them inside different tissues.

Testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme is abundant in androgenic tissues such as the prostate, skin and scalp, and is also present in the brain. This conversion amplifies testosterone’s activity in these tissues.

Trenbolone does not undergo that same conversion into a more potent androgen. It is resistant to it. Considering trenbolone’s high affinity for the androgen receptor, one might expect it to be very potent in these tissues too. Empirically, however, its impact is lower than testosterone’s.

Wilson’s research demonstrated the difference experimentally: trenbolone was as potent as testosterone propionate in tissues without 5-alpha-reductase, but produced less growth in tissues containing that enzyme.

A separate rat study found substantial growth of an androgen-sensitive muscle at lower trenbolone exposures without the prostate enlargement seen with the testosterone comparison. At higher trenbolone exposure, prostate growth occurred as well.

This is an interesting observation, and the comparison with nandrolone helps explain it.

Trenbolone is structurally very similar to nandrolone, better known in bodybuilding as Deca. Both belong to the 19-nor steroid family, but their behavior in androgenic tissues differs.

Unlike testosterone, whose androgenic impact is amplified by 5-alpha-reductase, nandrolone is converted by 5-alpha-reductase into a less potent androgen. Trenbolone does not undergo that same reduction in potency.

In this respect, trenbolone sits between the two: testosterone becomes a more potent androgen, nandrolone becomes a less potent androgen, and trenbolone retains its activity.

That helps explain why trenbolone can produce a strong anabolic response alongside less stimulation of certain androgenic tissues than testosterone—while remaining more androgenically active than nandrolone in those tissues.

But I do feel that this discussion should go a bit deeper to capture the full picture.

Anabolic steroids are generally characterized by their anabolic activity relative to their androgenic activity. Winstrol is a familiar example: its commonly quoted laboratory ratings put it at roughly three times the anabolic activity of testosterone and around one-tenth of its androgenic activity—an anabolic-to-androgenic ratio of approximately 30 to one.

Yet bodybuilding experience tells a more complicated story.

Take Winstrol on its own at a supraphysiological dose—meaning an exposure well above normal physiological androgen levels—and the muscle gains may amount to only a few pounds. Meanwhile, someone who has never used steroids may gain 20 pounds or more with the same dosage of testosterone.

The point is that laboratory ratings do not translate directly into pounds of muscle, size and strength.

This helps explain why many experienced users traditionally associate the androgenic nature of compounds such as testosterone and Anadrol with their overall impact. Their anabolic ratings on paper do not fully capture their profound effects on muscle growth. Other mechanisms contribute, some of which we’ll discuss below.

So, it is exceptionally anabolic

Trenbolone, as we mentioned, has a very strong affinity for androgen receptors. That is an important part of its anabolic activity—or, in simple terms, muscle building.

And this is not merely a laboratory phenomenon. Trenbolone works. Some would say it works too well, because the results can tempt people to overuse a harsh steroid in their ambition to achieve maximum muscle growth.

Its use in livestock gives us a straightforward illustration.

In layman’s terms, when you want cattle raised for meat to be as “beefy” as possible—maximum muscle from the least feed, which costs money—trenbolone is a mainstay of anabolic growth promotion.

Many old-school bodybuilders will remember names such as Finaplix and Finaject. These were veterinary trenbolone products. Years ago, before the modern UG scene developed and trenbolone raw material became widely available from China, many bodybuilders sourced their trenbolone from those veterinary preparations.

To summarize: for a real athlete seeking real muscle growth, trenbolone’s anabolic capabilities are at least comparable to testosterone’s—some would argue stronger than those of any other steroid—while its androgenic impact is muted.

Anabolism versus catabolism: building new muscle and preserving existing muscle

Muscle tissue exists in a constant balance between building and breaking down.

It creates new proteins and builds tissue—a process called anabolism—while simultaneously breaking down existing proteins, or catabolism. The balance between these two processes determines whether you gain muscle, maintain it or lose it.

This is why anabolic and anti-catabolic effects deserve separate attention.

Most of you have heard of Anavar. It is possibly the most popular oral steroid and is considered a highly effective anabolic. Oxandrolone has been used in a variety of muscle-wasting conditions, including severe burns and advanced HIV.

In Sheffield-Moore’s 1999 study, six healthy young men were studied before and after five days of oxandrolone. Researchers measured both processes using isotope tracers and muscle biopsies:

  • Muscle protein synthesis increased by 44%.
  • Muscle protein breakdown remained unchanged.

The improvement therefore came from increased synthesis—anabolism—while the rate of protein breakdown was unaffected. Anavar improved muscle protein balance by increasing the building process, without reducing the breakdown process in that study.

Building more muscle and breaking down less muscle are separate processes, even when both improve the final balance.

Trenbolone adds another dimension: alongside its anabolic activity, research has examined its anti-catabolic effects.

Trenbolone can interfere with glucocorticoid receptor signaling. Glucocorticoids include cortisol, a hormone that can promote muscle protein breakdown. In muscle tissue, that catabolic activity works against the balance we are trying to achieve when building or preserving muscle.

Two findings are particularly interesting:

  • In Wilson’s 2002 study, trenbolone inhibited gene activation induced by dexamethasone, a synthetic glucocorticoid. This demonstrated anti-glucocorticoid activity in cultured cells.
  • In a sheep study, researchers found virtually no direct affinity of trenbolone for muscle glucocorticoid receptors. Yet treatment reduced the number of available receptors and the muscle’s cortisol-binding capacity, supporting an indirect mechanism.

These findings help explain the combination that makes trenbolone particularly interesting for bodybuilding: stimulating muscle building while also influencing pathways involved in muscle breakdown.

That becomes especially relevant during dieting. A calorie deficit creates a challenge for muscle preservation, and trenbolone has a longstanding reputation in cutting and recomposition phases.

Its appeal as a recomposition and cutting agent becomes even clearer when we look at the animal research.

What the studies tell us about trenbolone and body recomposition

Trenbolone has been extensively studied in animals for an obvious reason: it is widely used for anabolic purposes in veterinary medicine.

No steroid has ever been submitted for FDA approval for body recomposition. We therefore lack studies designed specifically around improving the human physique for that purpose.

Nevertheless, the animal research is interesting because many of the underlying mechanisms are shared across mammals, making this research useful for understanding trenbolone’s effects.

You can explore some of that research here:

  • Trenbolone, visceral fat and bone health in testosterone-deficient rats.
  • Trenbolone’s effects on body composition and metabolic measurements in rats.
  • Further animal research on trenbolone and testosterone.

Taken together, these experiments help explain trenbolone’s proven reputation as a recomposition agent: dramatic anabolic effects alongside substantial reductions in body fat.

Compared with testosterone, trenbolone produced similar or greater muscle growth while substantially reducing fat deposits. Needless to say, its effects were vastly superior to those of the placebo group. All of this was achieved while the animals consumed measurably fewer calories.

What is fascinating is that the trenbolone-treated animals consumed less food voluntarily. They were not simply assigned a smaller ration by the researchers. Despite eating less, the anabolic response remained substantial, alongside a reduction in body fat.

In other words, the animals were consuming fewer calories while maintaining a profound overall muscle-building effect.

Trenbolone therefore appears capable, at least in animals, of reducing appetite while supporting muscle growth and improving body composition. For anyone familiar with the difficulty of maintaining a calorie deficit, that is an interesting combination, to say the least 🙂

We discussed these findings further in our article on trenbolone, fat loss and body recomposition.

The research gives a biological context to what many professional bodybuilders have reported for decades: for recomposition, cutting and contest preparation, trenbolone has an almost unparalleled reputation.

The attraction is not simply that it builds muscle. It is the combination of building muscle, preserving existing tissue during dieting and potentially making a lower food intake easier to maintain.

Trenbolone, growth factors, HGH and testosterone

Trenbolone’s interaction with growth-factor signaling adds another layer.

Our bodies have a complex system governing growth. Alongside sex steroids, there is another anabolic network involving peptides called growth factors. One of the most important is IGF-1, or insulin-like growth factor 1.

IGF-1 has some distinctive anabolic and metabolic traits, and some describe it as the most anabolic hormone in the body. Together with other growth factors, it influences cell growth and the activity of muscle precursor cells.

This introduces two different concepts: hypertrophy, the enlargement of existing cells, and hyperplasia, the formation of new cells. Growth factors influence the activation and development of satellite cells, which contribute to muscle growth and repair. These are dormant cells that growth factors “awaken,” activating them to participate in the development of new muscle tissue.

In a rat experiment, researchers found that muscle satellite cells taken from trenbolone-treated animals responded more strongly to IGF-I and fibroblast growth factor.

Interestingly, simply adding trenbolone to the cell culture did not reproduce the same effect. The increased responsiveness developed in association with treatment of the animal.

Research in cultured bovine satellite cells has also examined the involvement of IGF-I, androgen receptors and IGF-I receptors in responses to trenbolone acetate.

In simple terms, the rat experiment demonstrated that trenbolone treatment increased the responsiveness of these muscle precursor cells to growth factors.

Trenbolone’s anabolic activity thus also involves potentiating other anabolic hormones.

IGF-1 production is strongly influenced by GH, or growth hormone. That connection helps explain the synergistic effects so many pros achieve when combining GH and trenbolone: the idea is to influence both growth-factor availability and the muscle’s responsiveness to those signals.

Testosterone also strongly influences the GH–IGF-1 system. Indeed, the combination of trenbolone and testosterone is one of the most essential combinations for advanced bodybuilders.

Testosterone and trenbolone have synergistic anabolic effects, while testosterone helps mitigate many of trenbolone’s notorious side effects.

And there is more to learn

We have covered the main mechanisms behind trenbolone’s reputation for muscle growth, muscle preservation and body recomposition, busting some myths along the way.

That is enough ground for one article 🙂
